The Grace of Graciela

CLEARWATER, FL (October 15, 2024) We met Graciela, who was serving coffee and snacks to people from a flood-ravaged apartment complex. We approached her to learn that she works for The Salvation Army in Clearwater. On Columbus Day, instead of relaxing, she helped our Canteen crew deliver meals, and her sons stacked water cases. She had the day off, but instead of relaxing, she served the community. She exemplified The Salvation Army's mission and spirit.

Volunteers like Graciela show immense dedication and selflessness, often going above and beyond their own needs to support others. Their commitment to service is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have in times of crisis. These acts of kindness and generosity inspire and encourage communities to come together and support one another.

The flooding at a Clearwater apartment complex forced 500 residents to evacuate. Grace started serving coffee and snacks but has evolved into more. Several donations of clothes, baby supplies, diapers, baby wipes, toys, bedding, canned goods, and more are still coming in.

People have stepped up to provide essential supplies and support to those in need, demonstrating the overwhelming response from the community. During this difficult time, local businesses and individuals have donated resources to help the evacuees. Bringing relief and hope to those in need is a testament to the community's strength and resilience.

It's been wonderful to see the community's outpouring of love, in addition to how The Salvation Army serves those in need in a time of crisis. To date, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services team has provided 519 meals, 425 drinks, 517 snacks, and 59 individuals have received Emotional & Spiritual Care in Clearwater.
