The Salvation Army was founded in London, England, in 1865, where its International Headquarters can still be found. The leader of the Salvation Army faith worldwide is given the honorific “General” and elected by a High Council of international Salvation Army leaders.  The purpose of The Salvation Army is succinctly stated in its mission statement:

“The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.”
