Let The Salvation Army Through!: The Salvation Army Arrives in Lake Lure, North Carolina

Lake Lure, North Carolina (October 8, 2024)--Today, a Salvation Army Rapid Response Unit made its way into Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, one of the first relief organizations in the area since Hurricane Helene's devastating impact. Once famous as the filming location for Dirty Dancing, the area is now known for the catastrophic flooding that followed Hurricane Helene’s destructive path through the southern foothills and mountains of western North Carolina.

Following guidance from a local lineman connected with The Salvation Army in Hendersonville, the team navigated a newly cleared route into the region.  “We reached the first roadblock into town and informed them that The Salvation Army was here to bring food to the community,” said Dorothy Maples, who led the expedition into Lake Lure. “Then we encountered a second roadblock manned by state troopers. We were worried we might be turned away, but the sheriff instructed them to 'let The Salvation Army through.'”

Once in town, the team quickly mobilized to deliver essential food, supplies, and emotional support to the community. As they navigated the damaged streets, they witnessed the full extent of the destruction—collapsed buildings, uprooted trees, and a community grappling with shock.

“From there, we let God lead the way,” Dorothy continued. “We prayed with many people—both groups and individuals. Each was incredibly thankful for our presence, and we were so grateful to be there. Our work is a calling from God, and He guided us to share His love and hope with everyone we met in the community.”

Many connections were made in the Lake Lure area, many prayers were shared, and discussions took place about pockets of people who remain isolated and cut off from the community. The Salvation Army will return to Lake Lure tomorrow, the day after that, and the day after. As long as we are needed, we will be in Lake Lure and the surrounding areas, addressing the practical and spiritual needs of the community.

Glory be to God.

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." 1 Thessalonians 5:11
