Feeding Flooded Communities in West Virginia in Aftermath of Hurricane Helene

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s path up the southeast U.S., West Virginia is experiencing significant flooding across multiple counties, resulting in widespread power outages and damages to homes and roads. Mercer and McDowell Counties are some of the hardest hit so far, with the town of Bluefield experiencing historic flooding.

The Salvation Army of Mercer County is feeding over 1,600 meals a day. On the first day of feeding, the Corps partnered with The Salvation Army of Beckley, preparing food in their industrial-sized kitchen. Moving forward, meal preparation and distribution will be based at The Salvation Army of Mercer County. Mobile feeding will be supported by The Salvation Army Charleston Area Command with canteen vehicles to deliver food.

Additional rain and river flooding will continue to impact West Virginia throughout the week. We will continually monitor the weather and coordinate our service with government and VOAD partners in the region.
