The Salvation Army Sets up Base Camp in Douglas, Georgia

Douglas, GA – The Salvation Army of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi (ALM) arrives in Douglas, Georgia to assist regional counterparts with their response to Hurricane Helene. The historic storm swept through the state last Friday, causing significant flooding, wind damage, and leaving hundreds of thousands without power.

The Salvation Army has established a base camp in Douglas to run regional operations. The base camp will house an incident management team, response personnel, specialized equipment, and a fleet of mobile feeding units.

Incident Commander Major Ed Binnix stated that “When it comes to a storm like Helene, it’s all hands on deck. We’ll go where we’re needed.”

In the spirit of “all hands on deck,” The Salvation Army is joined by response partners Send Relief and The Southern Baptists whose skilled teams will help cook hot meals on a large scale. The Salvation Army will distribute these hot meals, delivered directly to impacted communities. Full food service operations are expected to begin Tuesday.

If you would like to assist with response efforts to Hurricane Helene, consider making a financial donation at helenehelp.org or by volunteering with your local Salvation Army unit. When you support Salvation Army disaster services, 100% of your donation is applied to the relief operation.
