The Salvation Army Begins Service to Address Emerging Community Needs in the Carolinas

Charlotte, N.C. (September 27, 2024)—Communities in the western parts of North and South Carolina are reeling after Hurricane Helene swept through both states, causing widespread flooding, wind damage, and mudslides. Currently, there are over 2 million power outages across North and South Carolina, and crews are working tirelessly to restore power to their customers.
As the unmet needs in impacted communities emerge, local emergency managers and agencies are requesting help from The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army is there and ready to serve.
Today, The Salvation Army of Greater Hickory and High Country received an urgent request to use its service unit in Boone, North Carolina, as a temporary shelter for people displaced by the devastating floods. In response, the team loaded their mobile feeding unit with food and a water donation from Pepsi and immediately began the treacherous journey to the mountain town.
“When we got the call from the Boone Police Department, we knew we could turn to our long-time partner, Pepsi, to help provide the supplies we needed,” said Major Ricky Perez. “We are thankful to share the love of Jesus with people whose lives have been turned upside down by this terrible storm and grateful to Pepsi for being such a great partner!”
