The Salvation Army of Georgia Mobilizes Ahead of Hurricane Helene to Provide Critical Relief and Support

Atlanta, GA (September 26, 2024) – As Hurricane Helene, a projected Category 3-4 storm, prepares to make landfall along the northwestern Florida coast and progress into Georgia, The Salvation Army of Georgia is mobilizing to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual care to those in need. In Atlanta, Georgia, Divisional Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) Director Lanita Lloyd is working with the Georgia Divisional Leadership to ensure that immediate and effective assistance is available for relief workers and those impacted by the storm.

"We are closely monitoring the storm's trajectory, which is anticipated to impact southern Georgia and possibly central and northern regions as well. It's critical that we are fully prepared to respond to any potential disaster,” said Ms. Lloyd. "The Salvation Army of Georgia stands ready to bring hope and help to those affected by Hurricane Helene, providing critical services and assistance when needed most."

In preparation for Hurricane Helene, The Salvation Army is activating an Incident Command Team and positioning 14 mobile canteens (mobile kitchens) strategically throughout the areas likely to be affected. These mobile units are stocked to serve thousands of hot meals, snacks, and drinks to displaced residents and relief workers. These specially designed emergency disaster vehicles will also be able to distribute essential supplies like cleaning materials and hygiene kits.

During times of disaster, The Salvation Army traditionally serves meals, provides shelter, and offers emotional and spiritual support. "We have a strong presence across Georgia to respond to emergencies in local communities,” said Ms. Lloyd. “We are committed to working closely with local and state authorities, continuously assessing the situation to ensure our response is swift and effective. Our goal is to serve the people of Georgia with dedication and compassion, adjusting our efforts as needed.”
