HONOLULU (March 14, 2021) – Following the heavy rains and flooding events impacting the Hawaiian Islands, The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands Division today announced that they are responding with community assistance as needed. Initial assistance events will be held on Monday, March 15, in Haleiwa and Hauula on Oahu to provide disaster financial assistance [for those with damage to their residence], temporary housing assistance [for those displaced by flooding], food and hydration, and emotional and spiritual care.
“The Salvation Army has an established presence on Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, and Hawaii, and we are responding in our island communities as needs arise,” said Victor Leonardi, Divisional Director of Emergency Services & Safety for The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands Division. “The events on Monday in Haleiwa and Hauula will provide survivors with financial assistance, temporary housing, and emotional and spiritual care. Additional outreach is planned for the future.”
Leonardi continued, “Many in our communities also have been asking us how they can help those in need. During emergencies, the best way to help is to provide monetary donations which allows the delivery of the exact relief supplies a community needs. Plus, The Salvation Army uses one-hundred percent of all donations designated ‘disaster relief’ in support of disaster operations.”
Monday’s assistance events are scheduled to run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the following locations:
Haleiwa
Waialua Community Association
66-434 Kamehameha Hwy
Haleiwa, HI 96712
Hauula
Hauula Community Association
54-010 Kukuna Road
Hauula, HI 96717
Survivors are encouraged to bring the following to help complete paperwork:
•Some sort of Photo ID or identification
•Photos of the damage to their residence
•Proof of residency if possible (i.e., a bill or official mail showing their residency address)
CDC guidelines will be followed and attendees must wear a mask and maintain social distancing while waiting.
Those in need, who are unable to attend Monday’s events or not in those communities, please contact The Salvation Army at Hawaii.SalvationArmy.org. The Salvation Army is part of a team of agencies providing assistance during events and is a member of the State of Hawaii Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD).
