The Salvation Army of Greater Chattanooga has served over seven thousand people in just four days of relief efforts
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – April 17, 2020 – The Salvation Army cares for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people each day. At times of disasters, it is no different. Since the Easter Tornadoes swept through the Tennessee Valley, The Salvation Army has served 7,351 meals, 2,616 drinks, 1,682 snacks, and provided 191 emotional and spiritual care in Hamilton and Bradley counties.
The Salvation Army has been feeding those housed by the American Red Cross in area hotels as well as feeding emergency relief workers at command posts and serving neighbors as they continue clean-up efforts.
“We have served neighbors today that we had served in 2011 since some of the same areas that were hit then are impacted by these tornadoes as well,” says Major Stephen Story. “One resident in Bradley county thanked me for the lunches we handed her and said she hopes it’s the same yummy sandwiches she was served in 2011, that they were the best sandwiches ever!”
The Salvation Army will need increased public support over the coming days and weeks. In addition to tornado disaster efforts, we will continue to provide ongoing care in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, to the un-housed community and meet needs through our social services office with food and utility assistance.
