Commissioner Barbara Howell Visits Wilmington, NC After Hurricane Florence

Wilmington, NC (September 23, 2018) - As relief efforts for Hurricane Florence continue across the Carolinas, Commissioner Barbara Howell, Southern Territorial President of Women’s Ministries, visited the Cape Fear region. She spent the day visiting with survivors, Operation BBQ Relief founders, and Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Service employees.

Commissioner Howell eagerly stepped into a mobile feeding unit to serve alongside crews, while offering an encouraging word as they work tirelessly in the field. 'We are in the business of building kingdoms and you are a part of that plan. You are the Lord’s hands and feet, and you are blessing to others,” said Commissioner Howell.

She presented a message of hope and comfort to residents affected by the hurricane and reassured them that The Salvation Army will continue to be present long after the emergency response has ended. She visited Operation BBQ Relief staff and thanked them for their continued support and efforts. "The Salvation Army is blessed to be a part of this wonderful partnership. Without Operation BBQ Relief and their ability to produce large quantities of food, our crews would not be able to feed the mass amount of people in the area,” said Commissioner  Howell. 

Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Service teams continue to coordinate extensive Hurricane Florence relief efforts in this region. As of this morning, power outages in the Cape Fear region are down to approximately 3,500 households. To date, The Salvation Army has served more than 72,000 meals and 43,000 drinks, 45 cleaning kits, 56 hygiene/comfort kits, 146 food boxes, and Emotional and Spiritual Care Specialists have been in contact with more than 3,500 people.
