The Salvation Army Comes Full Circle for Port Aransas Resident

Port Aransas, Texas (September 18, 2017) - “My house is pretty much at a total loss,” said Hurricane Harvey survivor David Beane. Like many other Port Aransas residents, the storm tore off the roof of David’s home and caused severe water damage.

“I’m actually in the water damage business,” said David, "so I’ve kept pretty busy taking care of everybody else.” Having spent so much time providing assistance to his community in the days following Hurricane Harvey's landfall, it was fitting for The Salvation Army disaster relief personnel to take care of David at their fixed feeding site by the Port Aransas ferry. A hot meal from the mobile feeding unit and bottles of cold water were gratefully received by David and his family.

In conversation with David, the mobile feeding unit staff learned that he knows a great deal more about The Salvation Army than most Port Aransas residents. David shared that he is the son of Salvation Army Officers Majors Howard and Clara Beane, who served for many years as Corps Officers in Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma. David grew up knowing the work of The Salvation Army first hand and has a great appreciation for the ministry and mission of the organization. When David spotted the mobile feeding unit pull into town, he recognized the iconic Salvation Army red shield as a symbol of hope.

“The Salvation Army is a wonderful organization. They gave me a strong religious foundation, which has helped me through so many hard times, and this is certainly one of them,” said David.

Through food, foundation, and faith, The Salvation Army is there to meet the needs of those impacted after disaster strikes.

Nine mobile feeding units continue to serve meals, hydration, and snacks at fixed locations in the Coastal Bend area of Texas, including the cities of Corpus Christi, Gregory, Rockport, Port Aransas, Holiday Beach and Aransas Pass. Two catering trucks are supplying additional roving service in the area.

As of September 18, The Salvation Army has served 635,688 meals, 615,261 snacks, and 685,987 drinks statewide in response to Hurricane Harvey. Emotional Spiritual Care Officers have spoken with 35,204 first responders and survivors.
