Dallas, Texas - The Salvation Army is providing meals and support to displaced residents from Longview and Gregg County, Texas, following widespread power outages caused by severe storms on Sunday evening, May 28, 2017.
The severe weather produced an EF-1 tornado in addition to high winds and heavy rain. More than 62,000 residents were initially left without electricity on Monday.
The Salvation Army mobile kitchens from Longview and Texarkana were mobilized on Tuesday morning and are currently stationed at the Red Cross shelter at the Gregg County Fairgrounds.
“Salvation Army staff and volunteers are serving lunch and dinner to shelter guests and those in the community still without power or unable to prepare meals,” said Captain Mark Jacobs of The Salvation Army in Longview. “We are privileged to serve the community at this time and will remain here until we are no longer needed.”
Meals are being prepared at The Salvation Army Social Services building in Longview and are served by the mobile kitchen volunteer team from Texarkana.
