Hampton Roads, VA (February 26, 2016) - The Salvation Army Suffolk Corps deployed an Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team to Waverly, VA in the late afternoon of Thursday, February 25 to provide meals, snacks, water and spiritual conseling to first responders and citizens affected by the tornado which had passed through the community less than 24 hours before.
The EDS team of five volunteers and Corps Officer Lt. Johnny Anthony served for three hours from a shopping center near the Sussex County government office, a few minutes from where the tornado hit. The team served first responders and citizens. The service of 45 meals, including hot dogs, bowls of soup, water, coffee and Gatorade concluded at 8:00 P.M.
As of 1:00 P.M. on Friday, February 26, The Salvation Army Suffolk Corps was on stand by to provide services again in the late afternoon if called by emergency managers and county officials.
