ATLANTA, GA (October 8, 2015)—As the after effects of last week's torrential rains continue to plague South Carolina with multiple dam breaches and sustained flooding, The Salvation Army Georgia Division has mobilized to aid in the flood response effort. Five of the twenty-three Georgia Division mobile canteens have currently been deployed on a 14-day assignment to South Carolina to assist flood relief efforts with mass feeding and hydration services. Three of the mobile Georgia Division canteens have been sent to Columbia, SC (responding canteens from Atlanta, Covington, and Elberton, GA), and two canteens have been sent to Charleston (responding canteens from Dublin, GA with a disaster team from Vidalia, GA on board and Savannah, GA). The five responding canteens are stocked and ready to serve hot meals when they arrive. The remaining canteens stand ready to respond as needed.
According to Major Jack Butler, Emergency Disaster Service Director for the Georgia Division of The Salvation Army, “Along with serving those in need, we continue to pray for those affected by the flooding and also for those who work in the relief efforts.”
The Georgia Division canteens will work in collaboration with state and local agencies and other organizations in flood relief efforts. The initial task for the Georgia Division canteens is to provide mass feeding and hydration services at established flood relief shelter locations in Columbia and Charleston. They will serve first responders, utility workers, volunteers, and those affected by the flooding. If the situation changes, the mobile canteens can adapt and respond quickly to other locations and also be deployed as roving resources in affected neighborhoods.
Financial donations allow The Salvation Army to purchase needed supplies quickly and to efficiently meet the most urgent needs of disaster victims.
