Salvation Army Support Continues in Van, Texas Following Tornado

Dallas, Texas (May 12, 2015) - More than 200 meals were served in the community of Van by The Salvation Army disaster team from nearby Tyler on Monday and Tuesday.  Meanwhile the mobile kitchen and teams from The Salvation Army in Abilene were hard at work delivering assistance to first responders, survivors, and work crews in Cisco.

Located about 70 miles southeast of Dallas, the city of Van has a population of 2,600 and it is estimated that more than 150 homes were destroyed or sustained major damage following Sunday’s tornado. The Salvation Army Canton Service Unit is preparing to provide Emergency Assistance to families in Van in addition to the delivery of food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care from the Tyler mobile kitchen.

In Cisco The Salvation Army has been working closely with the local emergency authorities to help coordinate volunteers and provide support. Crews from the Abilene Salvation Army served first responders and a second team visited with several families in the worst affected areas offering pastoral care and supplies.

The Texas Division Emergency Disaster Services department continues to carefully monitor the continuing flooding threat with more rain forecast this week. To make a financial donation to support the disaster response in Van please go to http://tsatx.org/vanstorm
