SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 11, 2014 - 10:20pm PST): In response to the massive structure fire in San Francisco’s Mission Bay District, The Salvation Army has deployed to service teams to provide food, cold beverages, and support to first responders and evacuees at two locations.
One disaster services canteen – a mobile kitchen, about the size of a parcel delivery truck - is stationed near ATT Park to serve an estimated 100 fire fighters, police officers and other volunteers assisting with extinguishing the fire. A second canteen is in place at Pier 54, to serve another 20 volunteers and approximately 30 individuals who were evacuated from adjacent buildings for safety reasons.
In addition to the two response teams, additional volunteers are on standby to provide support through the night, as needed. The Salvation Army will continue to work alongside officials to provide continued support to those affected by this fire.
UPDATE: March 12, 2014 - 6:00a.m. PST
At around 9:00pm on Tuesday, March 11, two Salvation Army Disaster Response Canteens and 12 volunteers arrived in the Mission Bay District to offer assistance of food and hydration support to fire fighters, volunteers and evacuees. One canteen was stationed at the scene of the fire (China Basin at 4th Street), and the other at Pier 54, where Red Cross Bay Area set up a relocation center for evacuated individuals. At approximately 12:45am on Wednesday morning, the canteen at Pier 54 ceased operations when Red Cross Bay Area closed the relocation center.
The canteen at China Basin continued to serve hot meals, sandwiches, coffee, cold beverages and snacks to the teams of fire fighters throughout the night and ceased operations at 5:30a.m. on Wednesday morning. In total, approximately 600 meals were served during this response effort.
Working in cooperation with Red Cross Bay Area and first responder agencies, local Salvation Army first responder teams remain on stand-by to lend additional food and hydration support as San Francisco Fire Department continues to extinguish the smoldering remains.
