Lewiston, Maine (May 6, 2013) - The Salvation Army disaster canteen has been providing meals for emergency workers and victims of the fires since last week. Over 300 meals have been served and 1000 beverages such as coffee, water and Gatorade.
Lieutenant Jason Brake, commanding officer in Lewiston has been at the scene of the fires, helping the families, firefighters and other agencies with relief efforts. His team of volunteers has transported many homeless families to an emergency shelter at the Lewiston High School. Also, The Salvation Army has helped serve meals at the shelter.
Firefighters are battling the third major apartment fire in Lewiston in a week. More than 180 people have been left homeless by two previous fires in the past week, one last Monday and one on Saturday. All three were in the same general area.
Salvation Army canteens are fully equipped mobile kitchens that are able to provide meals but also carry additional resources, including water, snacks, and hygiene products.
The Salvation Army is collecting nonperishable items for fire victims at their facility at 67 Park Street. Also, monetary donations are being accepted, The Salvation Army’s “Lewiston Fires” P.O. Box 178, Lewiston, ME 04243.
