Atlanta, GA (January 30, 2013) – As tornadoes and storms move across the state, The Salvation Army immediately responds to victims and first responders, prepared to feed over 300 tonight. Crews will provide food and hydration, as well as emotional and spiritual care.
The Salvation Army has mobile feeding units (canteen) at the following locations:
• Calhoun (Gordon County) - One canteen prepared to feed over 200 meals to first responders, who are conducting neighborhood assessments
• Adairsville (Bartow County)- One canteen prepared to feed over 100 meals to victims and first responders, in conjunction with the Red Cross shelter
As The Salvation Army meets the immediate needs of these victims and first responders through food, water and emotional and spiritual care, we are assessing the damage to coordinate a response for the next 48 hours.
“Even in the break of the storm, The Salvation Army is already on-site and ready to serve,” said Captain Douglas McClure, Regional Disaster Coordinator for The Salvation Army. “Being on-site I can already see the need is great, and have been impressed at the speed in which the local units have been able to respond to the disaster and immediately provide hope and relief to those in need.”
The Salvation Army asks people who want to help those affected by this disaster to visit www.salvationarmygeorgia.org or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY. At this point, in-kind donations, such as used clothing and used furniture, are not being accepted for tornado/storm relief. However, these items are vital to supporting the day-to-day work of your local Salvation Army. Please consider giving these items to your local Salvation Army Family Store.
