Hattiesburg, Miss. (April 20, 2011) Transformers exploding. Flying debris. Glass panes flying through the air. Pounding rain. Falling trees. Lives Seemed Shattered. Since Saturday, The Salvation Army has been providing hope in the midst of the mangled pieces, serving over 4,500 hot meals and praying with many more storm weary residents across Mississippi and Alabama.
Beginning, Thursday, April 21, 2011, The Salvation Army in Hattiesburg will be roving the streets of Leakesville, Miss. in Greene County to provide disaster recovery assistance and the light of hope to this rural Mississippi community.
The Salvation Army has prepared 100 boxes with non-perishable food and toiletry items. Staff will spend the day on Thursday Roaming Greene County, visiting homes that have been affected. A Salvatuion Army will handle any requests for clothing or necessary items.
Cold beverages will be available to work crews who are scattered around the county.
“This area is very isolated and spread out and creates an interesting challenge for disaster service,” stated Captain Andy Gilliam of The Salvation Army.
Recovery Assistance is limited to residents of the declared areas affected by the April 15 storms. Applicants may be asked to provide proof of residence and social security numbers for all residing in their household.
