Laurel, Miss. (March 10, 2011) – The Salvation Army in Laurel will be partnering with Mississippi Department of Human Service (DHS) and the American Red Cross to operate an emergency shelter at The Salvation Army in Laurel at 205 N. 13thAvenue. Residents affected by the flooding of Tallahala Creek are welcome to stay in the shelter.
The Salvation Army will provide the shelter space, emotional and spiritual care, and mass feeding for the emergency shelter as well as the nightly residents of the Men’s and Women’s Lodges. The American Red Cross and Mississippi DHS will provide the additional manpower for the operation of the flood shelter.
Those needing shelter are reminded to bring the following items for each member of a family: prescription and emergency medication, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and other comfort items.
Additionally, special items for children and infants, such as diapers, formulas and toys, should be brought, along with other items for family members who are elderly or disabled.
“The Salvation Army will be providing care and compassion to Jones County residents affected by these floods. We are grateful to DHS and the Red Cross for their continued partnership in meeting the needs of flood victims in South Mississippi,” stated Captain Bill Mockabee of The Salvation Army in Laurel.
