Lawrenceville, GA – Weathering torrential rain and debris-covered roads, The Salvation Army Gwinnett County’s Emergency Disaster Team immediately commenced food and relief efforts after a strong storm with a possible tornado tore through Buford Tuesday evening, damaging at least 56 homes in the Kirkstone Subdivision, downing trees and scattering debris across lawns.

“A staff member notified us of the damage and within a half-an-hour our volunteers and staff were at the scene providing emergency food, water and snacks to the residents and first-responders,” explains Captain Cameron Henderson, The Salvation Army Lawrenceville Corps Officer, who said the Team faced challenges due to the pouring rain, a wide-spread power-outage, and word of a gas-leak in the community.

Throughout the evening, volunteers provided food, hydration and comfort to displaced residents, and found temporary housing for four families whose homes were uninhabitable.

“We returned at 9am this morning to serve breakfast, and we’ve prepared 200 meals to serve for lunch and dinner this evening.”

Contributions can be made for those affected by this disaster can donate at or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY. Monetary donations will be used to meet immediate needs.
