AmeriCorps and The Salvation Army: Powerful Partners in Disaster Recovery

Wilmington, NC (October 1, 2018) - Emilie (pictured on right) is currently in her second year of service with AmeriCorps and has been working with The Salvation Army’s recovery operation in Wilmington, North Carolina.

“I think the most valuable thing you can give is your time, it’s a really important way to be a part of the community and to help people,” says Emilie. “Volunteering with The Salvation Army has been great; the people really care about helping and making sure people get what they need.”

The Salvation Army relies on nearly 3 million volunteers each year to help serve people across the United States. “Partnerships with organizations like AmeriCorps are vital to The Salvation Army’s effectiveness, especially during disaster response,” says Steven Hartsook, Incident Commander for The Salvation Army’s Hurricane Florence response based in Wilmington, North Carolina. “AmeriCorps volunteers have seamlessly joined our team, and we’re already looking for opportunities to work together in the future.”

The mission of AmeriCorps is to strengthen communities and develop leaders through team-based national and community service. Emilie knows that with volunteering, it’s not always about the immediate impact. “Seeing the change that happens overtime is what I like most about volunteering,” she says. “Just being able to make someone’s day a little bit better is what I like most.”

The Salvation Army is grateful for those who come alongside us to serve, not just during disaster response, but 365 days a year.
