SWONEKY Divisional EDS Participates in NWS Weather Spotter Course

Circleville, Ohio (04/04/17) - The Pickaway County Emergency Management Office in partnership with Ohio Christian University hosted a National Weather Spotters training class (Skywarn) in Circleville, Ohio on April 3rd. Skywarn is a volunteer program with between 350,000 and 400,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.  The volunteers from central and southern Ohio were given identification numbers and access to regional call centers to report dangerous weather.

The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services of the SWONEKY Division and the Emergency Management program at Ohio Christian University have a unique partnership.  The university actually owns an emergency canteen and the unit is cross-listed with The Salvation Army.  The program’s director and SWONEKY EDS Liaison, Thad Hicks advised, “Every year I train students to become Salvation Army EDS volunteers, allowing my students experience, while adding additional resources to assist in the emergency efforts of The Salvation Army.”  Hicks added, “The Salvation Army’s response in most of the division is already pretty good, but classes like these just make us a little better at extending assistance to those who need it.
