Salvation Army Teams Work Together in Houston Relief Effort

Dallas, Texas (April 20, 2016) – Salvation Army Officers, staff and volunteers in Houston are working together to provide emergency assistance to those affected by extensive area flooding.

More than 400 meals and 40 clean-up kits were distributed to residents of two apartment complexes again on Wednesday by the disaster team from The Salvation Army Pasadena Corps while the Northwest Corps mobile kitchen served 450 meals in the Greenspoint area. Meanwhile, the mobile kitchen and team from Kerrville, who made the four hour trip to Houston on Tuesday, established fixed meal service at the Harvest Time Church in Greenspoint distributing more than 250 meals and 150 clean-up kits.

Captain Lacy Parrish, from Kerrville, reflected on her day of service - “It has been a long and busy day working disaster response in Houston, serving meals to many individuals and families and handing out cleaning supplies. We've been so blessed to serve the people in this community. We've heard their stories of tragedy and loss. We've laughed and cried with some, but most importantly, we've prayed with many and shown the love of Christ.”

Meal service and clean-up kit distribution will continue on Thursday, April 21, at the following locations:

• Harvest Time Church, 17770 Imperial Valley Dr, in the Greenspoint area – 9 AM snacks and water, 11:30 AM lunch, 5 PM dinner. Clean-up kits also available.
• Cypress/Fairbanks area, roving mobile kitchen service and clean-up kits.
• Apartment complexes located at 5550 and 4605 North Braeswood Blvd – lunch and dinner.

Staff and volunteers at The Salvation Army Northwest Corps Community Center, located at 12507 Windfern, continue cooking and preparing meals to be loaded and delivered by the mobile kitchens. Several regular church activities have been cancelled and church members have volunteered their time to help in food preparation and delivery.

Four sites have been designated as donation collection sites in the Houston area. Only non-perishable food items, new towels and blankets, hygiene items, diapers, baby wipes and water are being accepted.
