Pensacola, Fla. (May 9, 2014) – As the flood waters begin to recede and residents prepare for possibly more flooding, The Salvation Army is distributing clean-up kits, rubber rain boots and meals to people still impacted by last Tuesday’s massive flooding.
On Friday, May 09, 2014, Salvation Army staff and volunteers will travel to the Gulf Breeze and the Bristol Park area to distribute rubber rain boots, clean-up kits and bleach to residents. They will also travel Gonzalez Court for an assessment.
Captain Robert Cornett, The Salvation Army of Pensacola, said the rubber boots are needed because flooding continues to be severe.
“What we can do, we will do,” he said. “We are here to serve and we will continue to serve the residents of Pensacola and the surrounding area until the need is no more.”
He estimated The Salvation Army will distribute between 300-400 pairs of boots to residents in the area.
Along with distributing boots, The Salvation Army is preparing more than 500 meals .
With the area under a flash flood warning through the weekend, The Salvation Army is preparing its volunteers and staff for more flooding and serving more residents who may be impacted by more rain.
Since The Salvation began its operations on Wednesday (April 30), it has distributed nearly 6,000 meals, 8,500 drinks, more than 1,500 clean-up kits and provided shelter to 437 residents who have been displaced from floods.
On April 29, more than 26 inches of rain fell in the Pensacola area paralyzing the city, prompting local officials and Gov. Rick Scott to declare a state of emergency in more than 20 Florida Panhandle communities. On Wednesday (May 7) the Federal Emergency Management Agency declared Santa Rosa and Escambia counties a federal disaster, opening up federal funding for the community.
The Salvation Army urges residents to register with FEMA by logging on to www.disasterassistance.gov or calling 1-800-621-FEMA.

In addition to feeding, The Salvation Army is prepared to provide:
• Clean-up kits containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies
• Hygiene kits
• Drinking water
• First-aid supplies
• Emotional/spiritual care
The Salvation Army encourages all residents of areas in the storm’s path to prepare an emergency supply kit and stay informed to all warnings. Disaster response professionals recommend having a three to five day supply of food and water for each individual of your family as well as flashlights, medication, and battery powered radio.
