Atlanta, GA (February 13, 2014) - Over 350,000 Georgians are faced without power and Winter Storm Pax continues its fury throughout the State of Georgia. While the skies were blue and temperatures reaching into the forty’s today, The Salvation Army was busy through Wednesday evening serving over 200 Emergency Workers at the Atlanta Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. Lt. Ashish Pawar walked the two miles from his home to ensure these workers had food, drinks and snacks.

Across the State, Salvation Army Officers and Volunteers continued to serve providing 1,069 Meals, 884 Drinks, and 271 Snacks. In addition to those currently residing in our 15 shelters throughout the State, 204 men, women and children walked through our doors last evening needing a safe and warm place to stay.

As the warmer weather and gusty winds rolled in today, The Salvation Army was preparing a plan to help those along Interstate 20 towards Augusta,GA. Major Jim Smith, Georgia Emergency Disaster Director stated “Over 85% of those residing in the Augusta area are without power. Knowing that they might need a hot meal or warm place to stay we are moving our Mobile Canteen and Disaster Crews to assist with this effort.” Thursday evening, two Salvation Army Mobile Canteens from Gainesville and Griffin, will be arriving in Augusta, with three more smaller Mobile Canteens arriving from Metro Atlanta, Dublin and Vidalia to assist GEMA with shelters with food in Richmond, Columbia, Burke, Jefferson, and McDuffie Counties Friday afternoon.
