Charlotte, N.C. (September 9, 2017)–Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Service (EDS) teams are on standby throughout North and South Carolina, ready to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual care to survivors and relief workers as Hurricane IRMA barrels its way toward Florida. Current computer models project IRMA making landfall in southwest Florida with a projected path into Georgia. Counties along the South Carolina/Georgia border and into western North Carolina are preparing for heavy rain, damaging winds, and tornadoes.
The North and South Carolina teams are ready to mobilize on two fronts: serving locally as needs are determined and services requested by local emergency management and also support Salvation Army relief efforts in other states impacted by the storm.
“As we prepare for this storm, we are praying for those in the path of this storm,” said Major Todd Hawks, general secretary for The Salvation Army of North and South Carolina. “Currently we have 20 teams with mobile feeding units on standby, ready to spring into action to provide food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care to those who need us the most. In the days, weeks, and months ahead, The Salvation Army will continue to respond to the physical and spiritual needs of the community.”
The Incident Management Team (IMT) is in place at The Salvation Army Carolinas Divisional Headquarters where planning and preparations continue for emergency response. Coordination to support efforts for local Salvation Army response will continue in the days ahead. Additionally, several Salvation Army units from across North and South Carolina are serving meals for local emergency operation centers (EOCs) and other locations as requested by local emergency management.
