The Salvation Army On Alert For Earl in Norfolk, VA

NORFOLK, VA - Personnel and volunteers are ready to serve those affected by Hurricane EARL throughout Hampton Roads, VA.  The Salvation Army Tidewater Area Command is working with local Emergency Management personnel in preparation for a response if it becomes necessary.

“As we continue to monitor the storm our mobile feeding unit (canteen) is stocked and the Disaster teams are prepared to provide assistance in the event Hurricane Earl affects the residents Hampton Roads”, said Major Lewis Reckline, Tidewater Area Commander.

The Salvation Army encourages all residents in Earl’s potential path to prepare an emergency supply kit, an evacuation plan and to stay informed of all warnings. In the event residents must seek shelter please refer to the enclosed Emergency Supply list of items to take to an area emergency shelter. “Our Emergency Shelter at 203 W. 19thStreetin Norfolk is prepared to provide shelter and serve additional meals as residents may feel the need to seek shelter,” said Major Reckline in regard to the Emergency Shelter which typically serves the homeless. Disaster response professionals in Virginia recommend visiting http://www.vdem.state.va.us/prepare/index.cfm for tips in developing their individual family preparedness plan. 

The Salvation Army asks people who want to help those affected by Hurricane Earl to visit www.salarmyhr.org, call 1-800-SAL-ARMY begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              1-800-SAL-ARMY      end_of_the_skype_highlighting or email Shelby Moore at shelby_moore@uss.salvationarmy.org. Volunteers are always needed in the event of an emergency. Monetary donations will be used to meet immediate needs of those affected by the storm.  The Salvation Army currently is not accepting donations of clothing and furniture for storm victims; however, please continue supporting your local Salvation Army thrift store and the much needed programs with your in-kind gifts support..
