SAN FRANCISCO, CA (July 7, 2013 – 9:30a.m. PDT):  The Salvation Army continues to provide aid and support to responders, survivors and affected families from yesterday’s crash-landing of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 at San Francisco International Airport, which killed two people and injured nearly 200 others.

Within hours of yesterday’s crash, The Salvation Army’s support was requested by local authorities.  A team of bilingual Salvation Army officers and volunteers provided emotional care to survivors and affected family members in SFO’s “Reflection Room.”  Blankets and shoes were distributed as needed and comfort was provided to those who were still emotionally shaken from the tragedy.  Some of The Salvation Army’s Korean-speaking team members were instrumental in providing language support to airline, government and customs officials as the processing of passengers continued into the early hours of the morning.   The Korean-speaking team was relieved at 2:00a.m. PDT for rest and is on stand-by to return this afternoon as needed.

Currently, The Salvation Army is still on site at SFO, with a new team arriving this morning to serve as lead on providing Chinese language translation support to responders and airline officials.

The Salvation Army is working in cooperation with local authorities, airline officials and American Red Cross Bay Area, who was assigned lead agency to administer support to crash survivors as this disaster moves into recovery mode.  The Salvation Army’s San Francisco social services department is making preparations to help fulfill the basic needs of Flight 214 survivors and families, as instructed by coordinating agencies. Additional support staff is on standby to assist as survivor needs evolve.

At this time, The Salvation Army is not requesting donations of material goods to support this effort.  Although The Salvation Army is not requesting in-kind goods donations at this time, gifts of gently-used household goods, clothing, etc., are always needed by Salvation Army Family Stores to support their work in the local community.
