Salvation Army team members serve meals at a community center after Hurricane Milton.

Sarasota, FL (October 17, 2024) – The Salvation Army continues to provide hot meals to survivors of Hurricane Milton with eight canteen teams serving in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Yesterday, a Salvation Army canteen began serving outside of the Walmart in Osprey, Florida. In addition to hosting a feeding unit, Walmart also provided a shower trailer and laundry unit for survivors.

Planning Chief Captain Nick Hutchinson stated, “Partnering with Walmart is critical during a disaster response operation. Walmart is often a community hub, so placing a canteen outside of their stores means that survivors can receive hot meals and relief supplies all in one stop.”

To date, the Sarasota operation has served nearly 27,000 meals and 8,000 snacks to Hurricane Milton survivors. Food service continues to increase as the Sarasota operation evaluates how best to meet community needs. In addition to food service, The Salvation Army is providing Emotional and Spiritual Care to disaster survivors in partnership with Southern Babtist Chaplin teams. The Salvation Army’s response to Hurricane Milton is an international effort, with crews traveling from all over the U.S. and Cannada to assist with the operation.
