Fort Lauderdale, FL (April 22, 2023) – In response to the flash flooding that devastated parts of Broward County last week, The Salvation Army in Fort Lauderdale began serving hot meals to those affected by the flooding and have served over 4,500 meals, 3,200 drinks, and 1,700 snacks. In addition to the meals served, The Salvation Army has given out approximately 1,350 clean-up kits. At the same time, throughout the week, The Salvation Army has also provided meals to be served at the American Red Cross shelter. While the community begins to clean up and recover, The Salvation Army will be hosting volunteers from Team Rubicon, providing a space to set up their operation and a place to stay. The teams from Team Rubicon will be doing muck out, assisting those who had flooding in their homes.
In partnership with the United Way, The Salvation Army, Fort Lauderdale Corps has been a drop off destination for collecting donated items for people impacted by the flooding. The United Way is also providing volunteers to help in the receipt and distribution of the donations.
Approximately $18K has been raised through online giving, which the Salvation Army of Fort Lauderdale in Broward County is very grateful, however, like corps officer Major Long explained, “We need a whole lot more than that, and I appreciate the Emergency Disaster Services team from Divisional Headquarters that have been providing clean up kits, cases of water, and other resources that are needed to make this operation very effective and impactful to those we are serving.”
Those impacted by the devasting Fort Lauderdale flash floods will need much more than a meal and clean-up kit and muck out assistance from Team Rubicon as they recover. Financial contributions from our generous donors to The Salvation Army will help us to help others and to meet additional needs of disaster survivors.
