ROSEVILLE, MN (April 14, 2023) –  In anticipation of rising floodwaters, sandbagging operations are officially underway in the Fargo/Moorhead area, and The Salvation Army Northern Division announced it deployed a feeding team to supply snacks and hydration to staff and volunteers involved in the sandbagging effort there.

“Assisting during times of disaster is one of the missions of The Salvation Army, and we’ve been preparing for a significant flood season,” said Major Michele Heaver, Disaster Services Secretary for The Salvation Army Northern Division, which includes Minnesota and North Dakota. “The Fargo area is the first of our flood response deployments this year.”

In addition to Fargo, Heaver added that they are closely watching the flood conditions in Grand Forks and counties all along the Red River, as well as conditions along the Rainy River in northern Minnesota.

“Indications are that there could be significant flooding along the Mississippi in the Twin Cities metro area and further south,” said Heaver. “We’re also watching those areas closely.”

Currently, disaster assistance will focus on providing food and hydration to staff and volunteers involved in sandbagging operations. As the flood season advances, assistance will then move into a clean-up phase as floodwaters recede. The Salvation Army will typically work with local response teams to supply clean-up kits, as well as gift cards for other necessities like cleaning supplies and gasoline for generators.
