The Salvation Army of the Carolinas Ready to Serve in the Aftermath of Helene

Charlotte, NC (September 26, 2024)—The Salvation Army of North and South Carolina is closely monitoring Hurricane Helene and the potential for landslides and widespread, catastrophic flash flooding in the North Carolina mountains and heavy rain, flash flooding, tornadoes, and wind gusts in the western Midlands and upstate of South Carolina. Trained staff and volunteers across all Salvation Army locations in the Carolinas are prepared to meet the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of communities impacted by the storm.

“The Salvation Army is on standby in North and South Carolina, ready to deliver essential services and, most importantly, share the love of Jesus Christ in communities impacted by this storm,” said Mike Patterson, Divisional Director of Emergency Disaster Services for The Salvation Army of the Carolinas.

Several communities within the flood warning area of western North Carolina are still recovering from deadly flash flooding caused by the remnants of Tropical Depression Fred in 2021. Majors Susan and Michael Rodgers of Waynesville, North Carolina, led The Salvation Army’s response to provide meals, meals, beverages, snacks, and emotional and spiritual care to more than 250 search and rescue personnel and first responders, and residents in Cruso, North Carolina after the floods.

“Our hearts are always with the residents of Cruso and surrounding river areas whenever heavy rains and strong winds are in the forecast,” said Major Mike Rodgers.  “These regions are particularly vulnerable to flooding, and with Hurricane Helene approaching, we fear they will be heavily impacted once again.”

In the days ahead, The Salvation Army will remain ready to respond to the community's immediate needs in the path of this devastating storm.
