The Salvation Army of Georgia Prepares for Tropical Storm Debby

ATLANTA, GA (August 6, 2024) - The Salvation Army of Georgia prepares to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual care to survivors and relief workers in southern Georgia ahead of an anticipated impact from Tropical Storm Debby. At The Salvation Army Georgia Divisional Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, Divisional General Secretary Major Barry Corbitt, and Divisional Emergency Disasters Services Director Lanita Lloyd strategize efforts to ensure timely and effective assistance to those in need.

 

After making landfall along the northwestern Florida coast, the anticipated inland track of Tropical Storm Debby will progress northeastward, impacting the southern region of Georgia.

 

“We are ready and prepared to minister in the name of Jesus to those who may be impacted by Tropical Storm Debby — to be there for them in their time of need.”

 

In times of disaster, The Salvation Army traditionally serves and prepares meals from its mobile canteens, helps distribute cleaning supplies, and offers comfort to those impacted. In preparation for the storm, The Salvation Army of Georgia has activated an Incident Command Team and positioned four of its twenty-four canteens (mobile kitchens) directly within the anticipated impact area, with the other canteens on standby. Other Salvation Army facilities across Georgia are also being prepped to provide support as needed.

 

“The Salvation Army has a long history of serving in disasters, from hurricanes and tornadoes, to major events like 9/11 and Katrina,” said Lanita Lloyd, Director of Emergency Disaster Services for The Salvation Army of Georgia. “Our mission is to be wherever there is need, and we will continue to be there for those affected by Tropical Storm Debby.”

 

Currently, The Salvation Army of Georgia has served approximately 200 meals at the Emergency Operations Centers and shelters in Chatham, Coffee, Camden, and Glynn Counties.

 

“We will continue to assess and adjust our response as needed,” says Lanita Lloyd, Director of Emergency Disaster Services for The Salvation Army of Georgia, “As Tropical Storm Debby’s impact becomes clearer, we will deploy additional resources to the most severely affected areas.”
