On Saturday, October 27th, 2018 a gunman walked into the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill Section of Pittsburgh and began to fire on worshippers celebrating Shabbat, leaving eleven people dead and six injured.
Our Divisional Director, Michael Riemer reported that three canteen crews were deployed to the area to serve in that area of the City. Additionally, two sets of Salvation Army Corps Officers, were sent to the Jewish Community Center, where a family reception center had been set up to provide notification services to next of kin. Emergency Disaster Staff were also called to the County Emergency Operations Center, where they put in a very long day monitoring the event as it unfolded.
Sunday evening there was a vigil at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall at 5:00PM, where a very large crowd gather. Majors Raphael and Sandra Jackson, Divisional Commanders and several officers attended the service to support the families of those lost in this incident. Outside the memorial hall, an Army canteen served coffee and hot chocolate to those who stood in the cold to show their support and offer prayer.
Today, Pittsburgh EDS will be serving a kosher lunch and dinner at the Family Reception Center in continued support to the victims families.
Disaster Services Director, Michael Riemer has asked that we remember the families and the impacted community of Pittsburgh in our prayers.
