Mobile Feeding Service Ramps Up in Houston and Across Southeast Texas

Dallas, Texas (September 2, 2017) – More than 75 Salvation Army mobile feeding units are actively meeting the needs of people across South Texas in the largest activation since Hurricane Katrina.  Relief teams continue to reach communities and pockets of residents who have so far received little or no assistance since Hurricane Harvey moved through the area.

Water is receding in Houston and leaving behind a stark picture of the overwhelming relief work and recovery that is ahead. 29 mobile feeding units are providing meals, drink and emotional and spiritual care throughout the city and 9 more are on the way. A Salvation Army field kitchen with the capacity to produce 15,000 meals a day is in place in Harris County to support the increased feeding efforts.

“We continue to pray for those who have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey and those who are providing such tireless and compassionate service,” said Lt. Colonel Ronnie Raymer, Salvation Army Divisional Commander for Texas. “The Salvation Army is privileged to provide a hot meal to a hungry survivor, a bed and shelter for an evacuee, and an encouraging word and a prayer to the individual who finds themselves in crisis.  We will diligently serve those in need as long as is necessary.”

The Salvation Army is coordinating a robust response serving communities along the coastline from Corpus Christi to Galveston to Beaumont and Orange. Service in each location is determined by the respective needs of the community.

Disaster Relief Overview (9/1)

• Deployed 77 mobile feeding units each capable of serving up to 1,500 meals per day
• Served 145,103 meals, 77,746 snacks, and 99,466 drinks
• Distributed 1,711 food boxes
• Distributed 1,577 comfort kits
• 35,000 hours of service have been logged by Officers, staff and volunteers
• Provided emotional and spiritual care to 4,202 first responders and survivors
