Salvation Army Transitions into Recovery in West Virginia

Charleston, W.V. (July 7, 2016)—As communities devastated by the West Virginia floods repair and rebuild, The Salvation Army is working alongside them, delivering food and drinks and lending a listening ear to neighbors hard hit by the floods.

“West Virginians are so resilient – everywhere we see neighbors helping neighbors as they clean up and rebuild,” said Carol Kirby, Salvation Army EDS worker from Lynchburg, Virginia. “It’s really hot out there so people are asking for sports drinks and water. l am so glad we can help West Virginians with their most basic needs.”

Carol is a Salvation Army employee at The Salvation Army in Lynchburg and has been deployed as an Emergency Disaster Services worker for many disasters.

Currently The Salvation Army West Virginia EDS services are transitioning from urgent emergency response and moving into recovery support. In upcoming weeks, The Salvation Army will be working with our volunteer partners and assisting as needs are assessed.

“In our initial response we were filling in the gaps of in the community with food and drinks and emotional care. Now we are working with partners to see how we can help West Virginia rebuild,” said Major Brooks Gilliam, Area Commander of The Salvation Army of Charleston and West Virginia Incident Commander for Salvation Army EDS response. “The Salvation Army is West Virginia proud and we are here to help in any way we can.”

The Salvation Army's response has just begun. In the days, weeks, and months ahead, we will be out in the community, lending a helping hand and a listening ear. We can do this because you support us. Thank you from The Salvation Army and on behalf of the many survivors we are serving.
