The Salvation Army Continues Support to West Virginia

Charleston, W.V. (July 4, 2016)—Salvation Army Emergency Disaster teams continue to serve survivors of the West Virginia flood that devastated parts of central and southeastern West Virginia on June 23. Today teams in mobile feeding kitchens are in Queen Shoals, Birch River, downtown Clay, Clendenin and the Clendenin exit. In addition, three mobile feeding kitchens are serving in the Greenbrier and Rainelle areas. To date, The Salvation Army has served 21,186 meals and 35,253 snacks and drinks, staff members and trained volunteers have worked 943 hours of service, and provided 552 individuals with emotional and spiritual care.

“As our country celebrates its birthday today, we are honored to serve the people who need us the most,” said Lieutenant Allen Adkins, Salvation Army Incident Commander for the West Virginia floods and Salvation Army commanding officer in Morgantown, West Virginia. “Today’s rain will not stop us. Our mission is to bring light and hope into the lives of people in their darkest moment – rain or shine.”

Currently, in coordination with the many other partner organizations that are providing services in West Virginia, The Salvation Army is drafting plans for the transition from response to recovery and care of flood survivors.

“As the flood waters recede we continue assess the needs in the region and serve wherever and however we are needed. We were here before the floods began and will continue to serve as long as we are needed,” added Adkins.

At the peak of relief service 10 mobile feeding teams of employees and volunteers from 10 states in The Salvation Army’s Southern Territory were serving in areas devastated by the floods.
