Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia Visits First Responders in Clendenin, WV

Clendenin, WV (June 30, 2016): The Salvation Army has been serving on the front lines of disaster relief since the flood waters swept through southern West Virginia last week. As neighbors are coming together to support their communities and celebrities are making their way back to their home state to offer support and encouragement, The Salvation Army mobile command center is serving as a centralized meeting point for relief effort organization.

Among serving meals, shipping in food and clean up supplies, offering spiritual care, and providing community support, The Salvation Army Disaster Services are working to meet the needs of this region.

Today, Senator Joe Manchin and special guest Brad Paisley travelled to Clendenin to thank first responders for their relief efforts of the devastated areas. 

Captain Brett Meredith asked Senator Manchin what The Salvation Army could do to help from his perspective, and he responded, “The Army is here every day serving our community, and I am grateful for what you are doing.  I don't know that there is anyone who does more for our country, the world, and for West Virginia than The Salvation Army. Thank you!", Senator Manchin shared. 

Gene Hogg, General Secretary for the Maryland West Virginia Division, had this to say, “The great volunteers for The Salvation Army have been working long and hard hours to meet the needs of those people who may have lost everything in the floods, and we are grateful for their commitment and spirit of service.”

How people may help their neighbors:

An appeal is being made for financial assistance to fund the flood relief work in West Virginia.  Those who wish to support The Salvation Army’s disaster response may do so by sending a check earmarked “June 2016 West Virginia Floods” to their local Salvation Army office, or by making a credit card donation at 1-800-SAL-ARMY or donate online and get up to date information on the relief efforts at www.disaster.salvationarmyusa.org.
