Corpus Christi Volunteers Support Long Term Recovery Efforts
Dallas, Texas (May 14, 2016) – Members of The Salvation Army Corpus Christi disaster response team, working as part of The Coastal Bend Discovery Recovery Group, spent Saturday volunteering their time to clean out a home affected by flooding dating back to May 2015.
The home is one of many in the Corpus Christi area experiencing ongoing issues after several flooding incidents over a period of 12 months. Sustained heavy rains resulted in damage to house foundations, roof leaks, and appliances. Volunteers worked Saturday to clean the home and properly dispose of furniture, appliances and clothing damaged in the floods.
“The home owners are an elderly disabled couple who are now unable to remain there,” said Salvation Army Disaster Case Manager Lindy Nawrocki. “The Salvation Army has referred them to a housing specialist with the Area Agency on Aging and to legal aid for assistance. The Coastal Bend Discovery Recovery Group will be working to clean out their cupboards, remove moldy clothes, an old refrigerator, and damaged furniture. There’s a lot of work to do before they can move out.”
The Salvation Army has provided clothing vouchers to the Family Store to four families as part of long-term recovery efforts and is currently working with 11 additional families to help with expenses not covered by flood or homeowners insurance.
The Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery Group is run by community volunteers aiming to provide and maintain a long-term recovery group during a FEMA-declared disaster for eleven counties, including Nueces and Jim Wells Counties.
