UNION, NJ (OCTOBER 1, 2015) - The Salvation Army New Jersey Division Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team is closely monitoring Hurricane Joaquin, which could potentially hit landfall this weekend.
"Right now, our first priority is to get ready for the storm regardless of where landfall occurs,” says Major Ivan K. Rock, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army New Jersey Division. “We have put our EDS team on stand-by, and we are coordinating closely with local and state officials as well as volunteers in preparation of events.”
The Salvation Army EDS team of staff and volunteers are often the first on the scene and the last to leave, bringing immediate aid as well as emotional and spiritual care to individuals and families whose lives have been affected by disasters. In addition, The Salvation Army canteens—mobile feeding units—are equipped to serve both beverages and hot meals—up to 1,500 hot meals per day—for first responders and victims at the disaster site. For larger disasters, The Salvation Army in New Jersey also has three field kitchens, each serving up to 10,000 hot meals per day.
The Salvation Army encourages all residents of areas in the storm’s path to stay informed of all warnings and prepare an emergency supply kit.
