The Salvation Army Preparing to Serve Following Flooding in Dallas

DALLAS (May 29, 2015) – Flooding in Dallas overnight has mostly affected people on area roadways as numerous vehicles became stranded in floodwaters. One apartment complex was affected, and residents are staying at a Red Cross shelter in a Dallas suburb.  Few other homes are known to have been affected.

Jimmy Stanford, Emergency Services Manager for The Salvation Army DFW Metroplex Command, has sent a team to inspect damage in a neighborhood reported to have been flooded. The team will also evaluate conditions at the intersection of I-30 and Loop 12 in Dallas where vehicles are reported to have been stranded.

Unfortunately, more rain is headed to Dallas overnight and conditions could worsen, especially if the water tops city levees, which could result in massive flooding of residential areas.

In the event of a major disaster requiring mass care, The Salvation Army could be providing services not only individually, but as part of the Mass Care Task Force, a four-agency collaborative that also includes the American Red Cross, VolunteerNow, and the North Texas Food Bank.  The agencies operate together through an official Memorandum of Understanding for local disaster relief efforts.

The Mass Care Task Force was created in 2006 following Hurricane Katrina when more than 25,000 evacuees found shelter in the DFW Metroplex for several weeks. The agencies have been meeting together and conducting joint drills and tabletop training events to be ready if and when a disaster occurs that requires mass care.
