Salisbury Salvation Army Provides Flood Relief In Wake Of Irene

Salisbury, MD (August 29, 2011)  - The Salvation Army sent a mobile feeding canteen and five volunteers to the coastal area of Crisfield, Md., to asses the damages and feed National Guard, Police Officers, fire fighters, rescue workers, and volunteers at the local Police Department on 314 W. Main St., before they were deployed to areas of need in the community.  The canteen provided over 200 people with sandwiches, drinks, and snacks.  They plan on staging the canteen at the same location on Monday, August 29, to serve lunch and dinner.

Many of the families in the area are still without power and others are thankful to come home to no damages.  Quote from one resident: “We are appreciative for the support of The Salvation Army and the willingness to find us and help us,” said Sandra Taylor from Crisfield.  “We went to Salisbury, to get out of the storms way but are grateful to come home to a roof over our heads.”

The Salvation Army in Maryland/West Virginia has been providing disaster services throughout the area.  As of August 29, 2011, the following was provided:

• 3,227   meals (hot and cold)
• 5,019   drinks
• 678      snacks
• 146      spiritual care/prayers
• 119      volunteers (Salvation Army Officers, employees and local volunteers)
• 1,056   hours of service

 These number are from 10 units stationed throughout the states and 2 shelters located in Anne Arundel and Calvert Counties.

 “Although we anticipated much more devastation from Hurricane Irene, we are blessed to see smiles on the people’s faces of the community.  We are grateful for God’s mercy of His people,” said Major Ken Morris, Pastor/Corps Officer of The Salvation Army Salisbury Corps.
