Salvation Army Flood Response In South Dakota, Western Iowa & Eastern Nebraska

South Dakota (June 14, 2011) - With river levels rising daily, thousands of South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa homes along the Missouri River are being threatened. The Salvation Army continues its relief work in the greater Siouxland area. Salvation Army disaster relief efforts have been underway in the following areas:  South Dakota (six sites) including McCook Lake, Wynstone Estates, the Gateway Complex, Tyson Event Center and two sites in Dakota Dunes; where levee construction is substantially completed.

The Salvation Army disaster services team from Watertown, SD joined the Sioux City team in providing meals, snacks and beverages to over 16,000 workers and residents, who have put in over 1,300 hours of help, in Sioux City, and Dakota City, NE and along the riverfront in Dakota Dunes, SD.

The Salvation Army Western Division, based in Omaha, NE is also coordinating plans for disaster relief operations in the Omaha Metro area including Council Bluffs, as flood waters continue to rise along the Missouri River.

The Omaha Salvation Army has partnered with Action News 3, Journal Broadcast Radio, Two Men and A Truck, CBSHOME Real Estate and Omaha Fire Department to collect supplies for clean-up kits, which will be distributed throughout the Western Division in the coming weeks and months. Employees of Koca Chiropractic Clinic are also collecting supplies for the flood response. Donations of used Household Goods and Clothing:

Due to the high expense and time demands associated with delivering your gently-used household goods and clothing (gifts-in-kind), The Salvation cannot guarantee that any individual gifts-in-kind donated now will be sent to the disaster area. In time of disaster, our stores fill these needs from existing, pre-sorted stock. By continuing to donate gently-used household goods to your local Salvation Army store, you not only help your community, you help us prepare for future disaster relief needs.
