University of Tennessee "Spirit of Volunteerism" Alive in East Tennessee

Chattanooga, TN - May 11, 2011- Tennessee has long been known as the "Volunteer State," a nickname earned during the War of 1812 because of the prominent role played by volunteer soldiers from Tennessee, especially during the Battle of New Orleans.  Now, almost two hundred years later, that same spirit of volunteerism is still alive in the hearts of its people.  Two weeks ago today, a series of tornados swept across East Tennessee leaving a path of destruction that changed the lives and landscapes of residents here in Southeast Tennessee forever.  In the wake of this epic disaster, volunteers from all over Tennessee and surrounding states have risen to the task of rebuilding this area again.  

The University of Tennessee Athletic Department recently held a donation drive for the hardest hit areas of East Tennessee and donated an entire tractor trailer of non-perishable supplies to the Salvation Army in Cleveland, TN.  Joel Rogers, of the Cleveland Salvation Army, expressed his appreciation by saying, “This donation from the University of Tennessee Athletic Department means hope for the 500 families who are currently without a home in Bradley County.”  Volunteer fans can be proud of the fact that in times of tragedy, the University of Tennessee is there to help all Volunteer fans recover from personal tragedy.
