Arkansas-Oklahoma Provided Services Throughout Second Winter Storm of the Season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Many are calling the most recent snow storm that impacted Arkansas and Oklahoma the Record Setting Winter Storm II of 2011.    Last week, between Tuesday and Thursday, records setting low temperatures were set as well as record levels of snow fall.   On Thursday morning, lows in Arkansas and Oklahoma were reported from 4 to -31 degrees (without wind chill).   Also, near Grand Lake in Northeast Oklahoma, 25 inches of snow was reported.   Fayetteville had close to 20 inches of snow.   Tulsa, Oklahoma has had the snowiest season on record since records have been kept.

During the most recent winter storm that began on February 8 and heavily affected the area until February 10, the following was reported (these numbers could go higher once all reports are in):

  • Approximately 4,300 meals served
  • Approximately 1,600 nights of lodging provided
  • 1,047 drinks served
  • 601 snacks served
  • Multiple showers, blankets, articles of clothing, and personal comfort kits provided
  • Warming Centers reported numbers close to the lodging numbers for clients staying in out of the weather

As a result of the storm, across Arkansas and Oklahoma, many of The Salvation Army shelters are in need of bulk food items, food items for food baskets, as well as coats, gloves, and blankets.   Monetary donations are welcome and can be made by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY or online at www.salvationarmyusa.org.
