The Salvation Army Provides Disaster Relief Throughout the Night for Lakeshore Survivors
CHATTANOOGA, TN – Local Salvation Army officers and volunteers worked through the night providing emotional and spiritual care as well as beverages and food for Chattanooga residents affected by a tornado touch-down in their Lakeshore area neighborhood on the Tennessee River.
Chattanooga Salvation Army officers, Major Kelly English and Captain Jon-Phil Winter, offered counseling and prayer to twenty-two persons including relief workers. The Salvation Army’s mobile kitchen unit, manned by Sergeant Ruthie Forgey and volunteers from Cleveland, TN, roamed the area through the night providing much needed water, coffee, and snacks to victims and clean-up crews.
“There was a lot of ‘drive-by pouring’,” said Sergeant Forgey, Corps Officer of the new Salvation Army church in Cleveland, TN. “We are tired after a long night but are thrilled to have given sixty bottles of water or cups of coffee to residents and relief workers even if we had to pull over and hand a cup out through the window. Our team also gave out 118 snacks to those battered by the storm.”
