Salvation Army Providing Ongoing Case Work and Points of Distribution in Texas

Dallas, Texas (November 13, 2017) – The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) immediately responded on August 25 when Hurricane Harvey struck the Texas coastline, providing food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care to survivors and first responders. Almost three months into the extensive relief efforts The Salvation Army continues to provide practical support to those affected.

At the peak of service in the aftermath of the storm 104 Salvation Army mobile feeding units were deployed throughout Texas, serving more than 950,000 meals to date. The preparation and delivery of multiple meals each day continued for as long as eight weeks in the worst affected areas. The Salvation Army’s ongoing assistance has gradually transitioned in focus from the immediate provision of food, drinks, cleanup kits and comfort kits, to the long-term support of individuals and families working to piece their lives back together.

The Salvation Army has opened eight warehouses serving as Points of Distribution across the affected region. These are located in Port Arthur/Nederland, Victoria, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Houston, Freeport, Texas City/Galveston and Orange. In addition, the existing EDS warehouse in Beaumont is in full disaster operation along with the 100,000 square feet Divisional EDS Warehouse in Arlington which serves as the main distribution hub for the state.

“These warehouse facilities are receiving, sorting and distributing a wide range of items that have been donated to The Salvation Army to help survivors,” said Alvin Migues, EDS Director for The Salvation Army in Texas. “Those affected can receive diapers and other baby supplies, hygiene products, clothing, mattresses, and in some cases furniture. We anticipate that these distribution centers will remain operational for several months, certainly through the early part of next year.”

Salvation Army caseworkers are meeting with individuals and families in affected areas providing limited financial assistance and referrals to partner agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations.

“The Salvation Army was already working in most of the communities that were affected by Hurricane Harvey,” said Migues. “We were there long before the hurricane hit, and we’ll be there long after the recovery process is over.”
