The Salvation Army Assists Volcano Survivors in Guatemala

Relief efforts are ongoing after the June 3 eruption of Volcan de Fuego in Guatemala, Salvation Army leaders in the area told SAWSO.

Lt. Col. Esteban Salvo, chief secretary of The Salvation Army’s Latin America North territory, reported that local Salvation Army resources have purchased and delivered supplies to the Alotenango and and Escuintla communities, located within the volcano’s “Ground Zero” area.

Under the coordination of Guatemala’s National Emergency Committee, volunteer teams have focused on distributing bathroom soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, sanitary towels, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorants, blankets, disposable diapers and mattresses.

In addition, teams of Salvation Army volunteers distributed hundreds of servings of bread and coffee to people within the Ground Zero zone. Children received packages of supplies and given opportunities to participate in recreational activities during this difficult and painful time.

Local Salvation Army teams remain in close coordination with the National Emergency Committee and the affected communities.

“We appreciate all the support and prayers that are given to address this emergency,” Lt. Col. Salvo said.
