The Salvation Army Responds to Virginia Shooting

Alexandria, VA (June 14, 2017) - In the aftermath of this morning’s shooting, The Salvation Army Alexandria Citadel Corps is now on the scene providing water and food to emergency personnel and investigators.

The shooting occurred in Eugene Simpson Field in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, less than 1/2 mile from the Corps. Republican Congressmen and staffers were having their final practice before a charity baseball game scheduled for Thursday night. The barrage of bullets shortly after 7 am injured five people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (La.). 

Arriving outside the perimeter of the shooting by mid-morning, The Salvation Army National Capital Area Command FedEx canteen was fully stocked with water and fruit for those on the scene. Hydration was critical, as the D.C. region faced the third straight day of temperatures climbing into the 90s. Local restaurants have provided the Canteen with meals for those on the scene.

"It is our privilege to be of service to first responders following the incident in Alexandria. We are especially grateful for the outpouring of support from local businesses that stepped up quickly to help in providing care to all of the emergency agencies on the scene," said Major James Hall, Area Commander.

The Salvation Army National Capital Area Command is already making plans to extend services into the next few days, if warranted necessary by officials.
